Greenhouse OS

Growers checked their greenhouses on phones, wearing gloves, in bright sun. We redesigned the dashboard for exactly that, and alarms are now answered twice as fast.

2×faster response to climate alarms

The problem

Greenhouse OS was designed on a big desktop screen. Growers used it on a phone, standing between rows of tomatoes, with dirty gloves and sun on the screen. Small tap targets and light grey text made alarms easy to miss.

What we did

We spent a day in two greenhouses before designing anything. Then:

  • Big tiles for the four numbers growers check most, readable in direct sunlight.
  • Alarms as full-width bars with one action each, reachable with a thumb.
  • A prototype week, tested on site with six growers.

The result

The median time to acknowledge a climate alarm dropped from 11 to 5 minutes, and the app’s rating in the stores went from 3.4 to 4.6.
